On October 1, 2018, SEPTA expanded the program to include select Zone 3 stations for Monthly and Weekly TrailPass holders. A card can be loaded with a weekly or monthly TransPass. When the Key Card program for Regional Rail expands, you will be able to purchase Weekly TrailPasses, add funds to the Travel Wallet, and TrailPass purchases will be expanded to Zone 1, 2, and 3 riders.
And to make sure seniors are getting the maximum bang for their buck, SEPTA is offering discounts to seniors who pre-paid for tickets at the old price. Registering a SEPTA Key Card provides riders with protection against loss or theft.
The fine print - Customers with cash or tokens will go to Fare Kiosk to purchase a single ride Quick Trip, which will be swiped at the turnstile much like you swipe a SEPTA pass today As you might imagine, introducing the Railroad to a new fare payment system is complicated so this will be the last step of the SEPTA Key transition.
This phase allows SEPTA to begin sharing the benefits of the Key with Regional Rail riders while work continues on system-wide implementation. The Early Adopters Program will begin with Monthly TrailPass customers who travel to-and-from one of 19 selected Zone 4 stations. The August Monthly TrailPasses go on sale starting July 20, and the new Key Cards will be good for travel beginning August 1. We will bring the Mobile Fare Kiosk truck out to the Early Adopter Stations for events where you will be able to purchase a Key Card, buy a Zone 4 TrailPass, and register your new card to protect it in the event of loss or theft. Regional Rail TrailPass transactions will not be available at Fare Kiosks during the initial rollout. You can reload Monthly TrailPasses online at or by calling the SEPTA Key Customer Service Center at 855 567-3782. Until then all existing fare instruments, including magnetic stripe passes and paper tickets, will remain available for purchase until further notice. As part of the preparations for the Early Adopters launch the new Key turnstiles and ADA gates are being activated at all Center City Rail stations. The turnstiles at Jefferson Station are currently in operation and will be followed by University City on July 2, Temple University on July 9, Suburban on July 16, and 30th Street by the end of July. The turnstiles will accommodate tap-and-go travel with the SEPTA Key Card, and customers with legacy TrailPasses can swipe through the turnstiles. Customer attendants will also collect paper tickets at the gates Monday-Friday, 6a-8p. Conductors will use handheld devices to validate Monthly TrailPasses loaded on SEPTA Key Cards. If you opt to get a SEPTA Key Card, beginning August 1, you will tap your SEPTA Key at the platform validator at your home station. Once you arrive at a Center City station, you will tap at the turnstile to exit. SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch said a full rollout can probably be expected in early 2017. You'll be hearing a lot about the benefits and flexibility of the SEPTA Key Card and the options for current token users under the new program. The Key Card is reloadable as needed or you can set up a continuous auto-pay account - it will be your septakey org.
